Beyoncé's Golden Record (Beyoncé picks up a female record six GRAMMYs )

By Tammy La Gorce

front_sasha

It was a night of pure GRAMMY gold for R&B songstress Beyoncé, who picked up six wins, a record for a female artrist, at the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards, including Song Of The Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Contemporary R&B Album. Country sensation Taylor Swift was the evening's runner-up with an impressive four GRAMMY wins, including taking Album Of The Year for Fearless, besting Beyoncé.

Black Eyed Peas and Kings Of Leon won three GRAMMYs each, the latter picking up the coveted Record Of The Year for "Use Somebody." Picking up two GRAMMYs each were Eminem, banjo maestro Béla Fleck, composer Michael Giacchino, Lady Gaga, Maxwell, Jason Mraz, and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

And in an evening of spirited, sometimes joyous performances, the broadcast's more reflective moments might have been its most memorable. Following a star-studded tribute to Michael Jackson, the King of Pop's children appeared, brave-faced and in armbands, to accept an award on his behalf. Later, Andrea Bocelli and Mary J. Blige sang a stirring duet of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to raise funds for earthquake-devastated Haiti.

The 52nd GRAMMY Awards kicked off in grand fashion, literally, with Lady Gaga opening the festivities solo, emerging in a green-sequined bodysuit with angel wings, accelerating from a purr to a powerful roar for her No. 1 "Poker Face," surrounded by a fleet of male dancers. Then, she faced a rhinestoned Sir Elton John — a 1970s fashion headline-maker himself — from opposite ends of a pair of conjoined pianos for a pair of songs: "Speechless" and "Your Song."

If anyone in the audience wasn't starstruck to begin with, they surely were by the time the pair passed the spotlight to first presenter Stephen Colbert. After cracking jokes — including one about a possible collaboration that would result in a group called the Pink-Eyed Green Peas — Colbert announced the winner for Song Of The Year, Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)."

Jennifer Lopez then introduced the cast of "American Idiot," a new Broadway show based on the Green Day hit album. The cast deployed big Broadway voices for a rendition of "21 Guns" before Green Day themselves thundered into the spotlight, reminding the world that it's been a long time since the lovable but much less profound Dookie made the trio stars.

Beyoncé, the field-leader with 10 GRAMMY nominations, took total command of the stage to open her performance. After parading down the aisle with a SWAT team of dancers, she launched fiercely into "If I Were A Boy," at one point dropping to one knee in front of a crowd of fist-pumping fans, before segueing into a version of Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." If she is known largely as a pop/R&B diva, that's due to change as Beyoncé proved she can not only belt, she can also rock.

Pink sauntered onto the stage solo to sing the gentle "Glitter In The Air." Despite a quiet start, her trademark guts and grace were on full display as she slipped out of a white robe and into a swing that lifted her high above the stage, an acrobatic move that saw her suspended upside down and bathed in dripping water, helping add drama to a daring performance.

It was destined to be a good night for the Black Eyed Peas, nominated for six GRAMMYs. A fashionable Fergie, will.i.am, apl.de.ap, and Taboo lit into "Imma Be," prancing and hip-shaking before bouncing in time alongside a team of dancing robots to their omnipresent smash "I Gotta Feeling."

Lady Gaga wasn't the only Lady sensation in attendance at the 52nd GRAMMY Awards. Lady Antebellum, who picked up a GRAMMY for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, sang the earnest "Need You Now," the title track from their new album, with harmonic grace and country prettiness. Everything about the performance suggested long-term promise for the Nashville-based vocal trio.

The multi-talented Jamie Foxx threw the audience a curveball in posing as a cloaked opera singer, but in short order got us feeling loose alongside his generous collaborator T-Pain — who was disguised momentarily as a wig-wearing conductor — with the contagious hit "Blame It." By performance end, Foxx was strutting, T-Pain's dreads were shaking, and Slash joined the fun, adding some wailing guitar pyrotechnics.

Best New Artist winners the Zac Brown Band struck a patriotic chord by opening a country-laced medley with "America The Beautiful." Leon Russell, resplendent at the piano with his long white beard, then joined in for "Dixie Lullaby." Brown, the band's huge-voiced singer, closed the medley with a feel-good acoustic blast of their No. 1 country hit "Chicken Fried." He capped the performance with a fiery solo on his classical guitar, calling to mind a pair of dueling banjos. What was clear, though, was that few musicians would want to engage in a duel with this guitarist.

Swift and everyone's favorite singing gypsy Stevie Nicks would at first glance seem to have little in common. Swift sings as if reading from her own diary, as she did on "Today Was A Fairytale," and Nicks — with whirling sleeves and deep vocals — made her name on mystery. But when Nicks joined Swift for Fleetwood Mac's classic "Rhiannon," the two voices blended to reveal something at once sweet and unique. Nicks stuck around to lend a hand on "You Belong With Me," adding vocal depth and shaking a tambourine.

Lionel Richie's spirit-lifting introduction to the evening's Michael Jackson tribute preceded a video clip, voiced by Jackson, recalling the tragedy of the King of Pop's death as well as his commitment to multiple worthy causes. Celine Dion led an all-star, 3-D rendition of "Earth Song," harmonizing with Usher before Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Smokey Robinson joined in. As the song built to its dramatic crescendo, each superstar took turns asking, on behalf of Mother Earth, the song's sad refrain: "What about us?"

It was directly after the performance that Jackson's children Prince and Paris took the stage to accept their father's Lifetime Achievement Award. Eyes around the audience filled with tears as the children delivered touching speeches in honor of their father.

Following an acknowledgment of GRAMMY Salute To Industry Icons honoree Doug Morris, presenter Sheryl Crow explained the mystery performance to come. While Bon Jovi would take the stage to sing two predetermined songs, the audience — which had placed votes up until the band's performance at CBS.com — picked the group's No. 1 classic "Livin' On A Prayer." The ageless Jon Bon Jovi led his Jersey-bred bandmates on the group's new anthem of hope, "We Weren't Born To Follow." Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles joined Bon Jovi for their GRAMMY-winning song "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Nettles stayed onstage to close out the medley with the aforementioned "Prayer," helping the band close out the medley with characteristic high energy.

Wyclef Jean, a native of Haiti, thanked the United States for its generosity in the wake of the devastating earthquake that recently struck the island. He introduced Blige and Bocelli, who teamed for a beautiful and graceful duet of Simon And Garfunkel's aforementioned classic "Bridge Over Troubled Water" — which is celebrating its 40th anniversary GRAMMY wins for Record and Album Of The Year. Bocelli opened in perfect voice and was joined by a stunning Blige, turning in a unique performance, raising voices in support of those in need.

Special presenter Adam Sandler congratulated the Dave Matthews Band on its 20th anniversary before the group, nominated for two GRAMMYs, launched into "You And Me" off Big Whiskey And The GrooGrux King. A string section and members of the GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles backed the upbeat performance that reinforced the reasons for the band's longevity: artistic sense, limitless imagination and, possibly, freewheeling dancing that owes more to fun than gracefulness.

Maxwell, who was nominated for six GRAMMYs, may have disappeared from music for a few years, but he — like Roberta Flack, with whom he shared a tender duet on the classic "Where Is The Love" — is not easily forgotten. Flack's rich warm vocals fit like a glove around Maxwell's sexy neo-soul vocal tone. And though Flack's voice can't help invoking '70s nostalgia, Maxwell's modern touches imbued the song with retro-hip stylishness. The effortless charm of his opener "Pretty Wings," from his GRAMMY-winning album Blacksummers' Night, instantly got to the heart of why Maxwell was sorely missed during his long hiatus.

Actor Jeff Bridges has an underdog's reputation, which made him an excellent choice for presenting the evening's Les Paul tribute. Paul, the incomparable musician and guitar innovator who died in 2009, was honored with a high-spirited and clearly heartfelt performance by GRAMMY-winning guitar legend Jeff Beck, who appropriately brandished a Gibson Les Paul, and vocalist Imelda May on the chestnut "How High The Moon."

Combine rappers Drake, Eminem and Lil Wayne and what you get is a whole lot of swagger and personality — maybe too much — to fit into one GRAMMY performance. Not so. On the "Drop The World"/"Forever" medley, Eminem spat mightily before Drake fell in to offer up proof of the following "Forever" lyric: "Like a sprained ankle boy/I ain't nothing to play with." Weezy's moment came late, but wasn't diminished. The hip-hop superstar trio added up to one of the night's most pumped-up performances, providing a punctuating finale to the evening's musical lineup.

The evening's final statue was presented to Swift for Album Of The Year, which the young singer/songwriter accepted with youthful exuberance and a surprising long-term point of view:

"This is the story…when we are 80 years old, and we are telling the same stories over and over to our grandkids, and they are so annoyed with us, this is the story we are going to be telling over and over again: In 2010 that we got to win Album Of The Year at the GRAMMYs!"

How we saved £1,200 on household bills – part 1

By Telegraph

bills gaga
On a mission to reduce her utility bills, our reporter has given her house the once-over, working out where costs can be cut and installing more efficient products.

Hard times make it more important than ever to ensure you are not wasting cash. Now that gas and electricity bills cost the average household more than £1,000 a year, many people could save hundreds of pounds. Nor is there any need to wait until it gets colder before you take action.

Here is how I set out to save money now. Watch this space for an update on the changes below – and whether they were worth it.

Learn how to read your water meter

Annual savings target: £66

When we bought our home in December, I signed us up for a Southern Water meter. When the meter man pulled up in his van the very next day, I grew suspicious. He seemed a little too keen to save me money, surely there was a catch?

Paul Hale, technical director at the energy consultants Pureworld, said: "If you have more bedrooms than there are people living in your home, you are the type of household that will benefit from a water meter."

If you install a meter and then your circumstances change, you can always switch back within 12 months or a month after your second measured bill, whichever is later, but if you move into a home which already has a meter you cannot switch to a standard rate.

The water services regulation authority, Ofwat, estimates metering can reduce household water consumption by more than 20pc. On an average annual bill of £312 this would be a saving of £66.

Most meters are read twice a year, but regulations set by Ofwat require the water companies to read your meter only once every two years. You are welcome to read your own meter and submit the reading online.

As it turns out, finding your meter is easy. Most meters are in the public footpath outside your house or in the front garden, but sometimes a meter is inside the house next to the stop tap.

You will generally find the meter in a small chamber under a metal or plastic cover. Underneath the cover you may see a polystyrene plug that protects your meter against frost and debris, so make sure you replace this when you have finished. On the meter face there are two sets of numbers, black on the left and red on the right.

The black numbers show the number of cubic metres used, while the red ones show litres. From left to right, read the black and ignore the red numbers and submit your reading to your water company.
Install an Ecocamel shower head

Annual savings target: £120

One look at our power shower and Mr Hale explained that we were literally flushing our money down the drain.

He measured the amount of water that was used by my shower head – a shocking 16 litres per minute. I was told that if I switched to an Ecocamel shower head, I could reduce this to only six litres a minute without noticeably reducing the pressure.

It all seemed a bit complicated, and I do enjoy a nice long shower, but after some quick maths I figured this showerhead could save me almost 80 litres during an eight-minute shower.

I am sceptical whether it will rinse out my conditioner, but decided it was worth a try. The Ecocamel costs £24.95, and is available at www.ecocamel.co.uk.
Install tap aerators

Annual savings target: £40

According to the Energy Saving Trust, the average person in Britain uses about 150 litres of water every day.

Mr Hale spotted a leaking hot water tap in my downstairs bathroom, and told me that this could drive up my water and gas bills by almost £30 a year.

Starting to get the hang of this, in the kitchen I proudly showed him the energy-efficient dishwasher. I told him we only ran it when it was full, rattling off stats about how much water this saved.

I should have known better than to show off to the energy expert. The water savings were cancelled out by our rinsing of dishes before we loaded them in the dishwasher.

Out came the plastic measuring bag, and Mr Hale found my kitchen tap produced 15 litres of water a minute – almost the same as a power shower, just to rinse the plates. Naturally, he had a solution – tap aerators.

A tap aerator is a simple and inexpensive way to reduce water consumption at your tap outlet. Tap aerators can reduce the flow rate by about 60pc or more, for example from 15 litres to six litres a minute.

You can find aerators online at www.biggreensmile.com for £4.95.
Use energy-saving light bulbs

Annual savings target: £190

Yes, I know these have a bad reputation, but do read on. We counted 29 lights in our house, with a total power consumption of 1,050 watts.

Of all these bulbs, only one was energy-efficient – which is typical of the average household according to Which.co.uk.

Its research shows that while 93pc of people have this type of bulb in their house, only 21pc use them in all their lights.

So, what was my excuse? I confessed I thought these bulbs were too dim.

It turns out that energy-efficient bulbs use up to 80pc less electricity than a standard bulb, but produce the same amount of light. Advances in technology mean that energy-saving light bulbs are now available in a wide variety of fittings, shapes and sizes, so there went my second excuse.

A quick search on the B&Q website for example, shows they have almost 85 types of these light bulbs, which range from stick-shaped bulbs to candle-shaped varieties, with a small or medium screw and bayonet fittings and start at just over £3.

There are even halogen and dimmable energy-saving bulbs on the market. And thanks to the invention of "soft tone" bulbs, you can enjoy a warm glow, rather than a cold light.

Mr Hale said if I installed energy-saving bulbs in all of my lights, I could reduce my consumption to 389 watts.

"Based on your electricity tariff, it would cost you 19p an hour to run all the lights in your house on normal bulbs.

Switch to energy savers and this is cut down to just 6p an hour. Which means if you had the lights on for an average of four hours a day for an entire year, you would spend almost £280 a year. But go with the energy-efficient bulbs and this drops to just about £90 a year."

Contact your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre on Freephone 0800 512 012 to ask about who in your area is giving away free light bulbs.
Top up your insulation

Annual savings target: £60

More than half of all homes in Britain have inadequate insulation, with 50pc of heat lost through uninsulated lofts and cavity walls, according to the National Insulation Association. Although, after last winter, I suspect our house is even worse – and I come from Canada, so if I think it's nippy it must be very cold.

Mr Hale surveyed our property, and unfortunately, because of the type of build, our house cannot have cavity-wall situation.

A quick look in the loft showed that it only had minimal insulation of just 100mm (4in) when the recommended depth for mineral wool insulation is 270mm (11in).

So far, so not good.

But all was not lost as he said I could easily top up our loft insulation to the recommended level. There are grants and offers available to help pay for loft insulation – but these can prove difficult to obtain in practice. Once again, it's best to apply in good time rather than wait for it to become urgent.

Winnie Mandela Threatens Legal Action Over Jennifer Hudson Bio-Pic

From the Telegraph:

Winnie Mandela,Nelson Mandela,South Africa

Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie is threatening legal action against the makers of a biographical film about her starring Jennifer Hudson.

The film is likely to detail the fraud, kidnapping and murder controversies that have surrounded the anti-apartheid leader’s former wife.

Mrs Madikizela-Mandela, as she has been known since her divorce from Mr Mandela in 1996, is one of South Africa’s most controversial and divisive figures.

She is revered in some quarters as the "Mother of the Nation" for her role in the struggle, the harassment she suffered from the white authorities, and her populist rhetoric that still appeals to South Africa's poor.

But for others she is reviled. She once notoriously declared that "with our boxes of matches and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country", referring to the preferred way of killing suspected informers in the townships, setting fire to a petrol-filled tyre around their necks, so ensuring an agonising death.

Under apartheid she was convicted of kidnapping Stompie Moeketsi, 14, who was later found beaten to death in Soweto, and long after the advent of democracy, she was convicted of more than 40 charges of fraud in 2003 – her prison sentence was replaced with a suspended term on appeal.

Even so she topped the poll for the ruling African National Congress' national executive committee at its last congress in 2007, prompting speculation – which proved to be unfounded – that she would be given a cabinet post in Jacob Zuma's government.

The South African-made film, titled Winnie, is due to start shooting in May and will star Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning American actress, whose casting in the role provoked protests from South African actors.

It is based on an independent biography of her, Winnie Mandela: A Life, by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, a former journalist, described by one reviewer as "hard-hitting but not heartless".

Nonetheless lawyers for Mrs Madikizela-Mandela, 73, have stepped in to warn the producers that she is reserving her legal rights.

A letter from Bowman Gilfillan, one of the country's leading law firms, said she had not been approached for consent to the film, according to Johannesburg's Star newspaper.

"It is difficult to understand how a production bearing the name of an individual who has not been consulted at all could ever be appropriate or tell the full story of that individual life," it quoted the letter as saying.

"This is certainly the case here where our client has not responded to allegations and comment which have been made about her, precisely because she has sought to protect her sphere of personal privacy as best she can in extremely difficult and turbulent times."

A spokesman for Bowman Gilfillan declined to comment on the matter, citing lawyer-client privilege.

In a statement on Tuesday night, the producers’ spokesman Dezi Rorich said they had met Mrs Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyers, but were “unable to reach an understanding with them”, and made clear they would not back down.

“The position of the producers is that if a screenplay has to be approved by Ms Madikizela-Mandela, then the film based on that screenplay could possibly be jeopardised as the world may question the credibility of the film,” she said, adding that they were advised that they do not legally need her consent to make the film.

But in a nod to the potential sensitivity of the issue, she added that they “do not intend any disrespect towards Ms Madikizela-Mandela or the Mandela family by not requesting such consent”.

The ANC's spokesman Brian Sokutu said that "out of courtesy and respect" the filmmakers should have discussed the project with her "to see how she feels", particularly as it was likely to be "highly controversial and personal".

Mrs Madikizela-Mandela, he said, was "entitled to take legal action to protect her reputation from any form of character assassination".

But he declined to say whether the party would back her in any attempt to stop it being made. "We are a constitutional democracy," he said.

Is There Beef Between Beyonce & Kelly?

By Sweet Sweetback January 26, 2010 1:15 pm

Beyonce and Kelly Rowland

There are rumors circulating about Beyonce and Kelly Rowland’s estranged relationship. Now that Kelly spends most of her time in Europe and Beyonce married, the two women haven’t been seen together in quite some time. The two recently attended the NRJ Music Awards, and not once did they cross paths. Hmmmmm!!!

Apparently Beyonce decided not to walk the red carpet, therefore providing no photo-op of the two ladies to dispel the rumors.

To make matters worst, in the video below, Beyonce wins Greatest Artist of the Decade, and did not thank Kelly Rowland or Destiny’s Child, hell she didn’t even mention any family members by name.

Take a look at the video:

So Solid: the comeback

BY Davina Morris

so soild comeback

RECALLING the journey of So Solid Crew requires more words than this article will allow.

And quite frankly, if you’ve never heard of the infamous south London garage collective, you were probably hibernating throughout the early noughties.

But in short (well, short-ish), the British crew – famed for having around 30 members – shot to the top of the UK charts in 2001 with their smash hit, 21 Seconds; scooped several MOBO awards and a Brit Award; and are credited as one of the most significant acts to bring UK garage to the mainstream.

Unfortunately, the group went on to become associated with violence when two men were shot at one of their shows at London’s Astoria nightclub in 2001. As a result, promoters cancelled their upcoming tour in fear of further trouble and so, their reputation as the UK’s most controversial crew was born.

Of course, it didn’t help that crew members found themselves on the wrong side of the law. In 2002, Ashley Walters was jailed for possessing a gun and in 2003, G-Man was jailed for the same offence. The following year, founding member Megaman was charged with murder, having been accused of encouraging producer Carl Morgan to shoot Colin Scarlett in November 2004. Mega (as he’s now known) was held in custody, but was later cleared of the charge.

Now, older and wiser, So Solid make their return to the music fold with original members Mega, Romeo and Lisa Maffia fronting the collective. Back with an aptly titled new track, Since You Went Away, the group is focused and ready for action, as Mega – real name Dwayne Vincent – explains.

What would you say to those who feel that So Solid’s time has passed?

A lot of people think that. I think it’s sad that people look at black British artists and think that their life span should only be five years. That’s not the case in America. Look how many years Michael Jackson made music for. And even bashment; artists like Beenie Man and Bounty Killer have been around for years. I think in the UK we need to think out of the box and think bigger. Furthermore, when it comes to the black British music scene, we’re not really creators, we’re followers. That’s why when a crew like So Solid comes out, they stand out.

The last year or so has seen a surge of grime artists become pop stars. Are those acts not creating their own scene?

I don’t think anyone’s created their own scene. When So Solid came on the scene, we made garage, we released garage and we went to number one with garage. Nowadays, you’ve got artists who’ve been around for a while doing grime, and as soon as they get signed and release a tune, you don’t hear grime any more. There are a lot of creative artists who are good at making grime but they’re putting out dance tracks. I don’t know if they’re doing it for a pay cheque or if they’re doing it so they can play in different territories. Either way, I don’t wrong them for it. But they should also remember that are a lot of people who were inspired by their original work and not just think about looking out for themselves.

But was that not part of your problem as the leader of the crew: too many people to look out for? Do you think you’re too caring?

Yeah, maybe. But we’re young, gifted and black and we like to do things in numbers. I think it gets really creative when you have a number of people round the table, all putting in their two pence worth. I still have artists that are loyal and that I still do business with and I think it’s important to nurture new talents. I don’t know how many crews are still like that today. I don’t know if we’ll ever see another Roll Deep. I don’t know what happened to Pay As You Go or what happened to More Fire Crew.

Will So Solid’s comeback include all of the original members?

So Solid has never had a track where all of the crew were on it. Oh No (Sentimental Things) was just me, Lisa and Romeo. Then there was 21 Seconds, which featured a few of us. Then there was They Don’t Know, which was just me and Ash. Then there was Haters, which was Scat D, Face and Ash. Then there was Ride With Us – and that was just me! So we’ve never had everybody on one track. But you’ll get plenty of us on the album.

Do you think the industry will be willing to welcome So Solid back with open arms, given your controversial past?

My mum once said to me, ‘If I didn’t forgive you for your first mistake, I wouldn’t be your mother.’ It’s been a long time since So Solid were on the scene and I think people have moved on. In many ways, we were used as scapegoats for a lot of things. Yes, certain individuals made mistakes. But in terms of So Solid as a collective, we were blamed for a lot of problems in society, and the reality is, things haven’t got any better since So Solid got locked down.

Do you think your stint in prison gave you a new outlook on life?

Yeah, it did. It made me realise the opportunity I had and showed me that I had to make the most of it. I mean, I don’t live in the ghetto anymore; I moved out of that environment. I don’t even live in London anymore. I’m just in a nice space now where I can focus and I’m comfortable.

Do you have any regrets?

I think my regrets are very personal. Like I regret not looking after my own interests. I’ve been through a lot… the powers that be tried to put me in prison for 30 years when I wasn’t the gunman. I didn’t incite anything or pull the trigger. I was at the scene, trying to resolve a situation between two people. I had to go through three trials in order to get a not guilty verdict. I’ve come through all that and now I’m working to get back to where I need to be. This is my passion. And nothing can kill that apart from God himself. Yes, I get angry sometimes but I keep my focus. I smile at the people who hate me, I laugh with the people who dislike me, and I just keep it moving.

CBB Sisqo has baby with 14-year-old?

sisco

It has been reported that Celebrity Big Brother star Sisqo fathered a child with a 14-year-old fan 10 years ago.

According to a Swiss court, the American R‘n’B singer, real name Mark Andrews, impregnated the Kenyan-born girl after a concert with his former band, Dru Hill in 1999.

Sisqo has avoided many opportunities to take DNA tests to prove he isn’t the father of 10-year-old Ian. The Swiss court have ruled that the CBB contestant should pay monthly child support fees.

The woman, now 25, claims to have met the 90s heartthrob at a VIP reception after a concert in Zurich in 1999,

She said: “After the concert Sisqo was standing with his band at the bar, we went over and talked to them. Then everything went very fast.”

She raised the child with the help of her parents and says that her son is “very proud” of his father. She said: “Ian often saw his father on TV. He’s very proud of him. It’s up to his father to prove his right to be proud.”

The Swiss press have revealed that the unnamed woman has successfully sued Sisqo for child support.

Stop and search deemed unlawful

BY Maxine Myers

ONE OF Britain’s top barrister’s Peter Herbert has welcomed a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights which has deemed that random stop and search is now illegal.

“For the first time the European Court has recognised that the police powers enshrined under section 44 of the anti terrorism act was wholly unlawful. We have long suspected that this has amounted to an abuse of police powers. It was used in ridiculous situations like children under 9 being searched,” he told The Voice.

The method of questioning people without valid reason has been used since its introduction under anti-terror laws in 2000.

However, judges at the Strasbourg court ruled that it violated the European Convention on Human Rights, which states that everyone has the right to respect for their private and family life.

Herbert, who is also a chair of the Society of Black Lawyers, believes the ruling will have a positive effect on the black community who are disproportionately affected by stop and search. Recent figures from the Justice Ministry indicate that the number of black people being stopped and searched under counter terrorism laws rose by 322 per cent.

“I think it would make it more difficult to stop and search people with a racial profile,” he said.

Despite the ruling the government plan to appeal according to home secretary Alan Johnson.

“Stop and search under section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 is an important tool in the ongoing fight against terrorism,” he said.

But Herbert disagrees with the Home Secretary stating that random stop and search was “ineffective”.

“The police themselves were confused about what it was designed to do. We were told that it was meant to disrupt terrorism activities, detect crime and reassure the public and it achieved none of these three objectives ever,” he said.

Herbert believes that the increased powers the police had led to more discrimination against black people.

“It was a power that was always going to inevitably lead to an increase in racism and it made a bad situation a lot worse.

“There are wide ranging powers of stop and search in existence already they don’t need additional powers they never have.”

‘Precious’: Unforgettable Story of Hope, Self-Reliance

by Carl Kozlowski

Some lives slip through the cracks, people who you might pass everyday without giving a second thought. Precious is one of those people.

Vastly overweight and carrying her second child at the far-too-young age of 16, Precious is an African-American girl living in the Bronx who’s stuck four years behind her age group in the 7th grade, with a single mother who is verbally, emotionally and physically abusive towards her. Her father is only in the picture enough to come over and rape her, which led to her first child being born with Down Syndrome, and Precious utterly unaware of proper prenatal care or even a delivery date for her second.

The only thing that brings her any sense of joy is her imagination, which Precious uses to block out horrific moments of the past and present with visions of herself on red carpets and other glamorous situations. But when a school official steps in and orders her to go to an alternative school for troubled young women, a concerned teacher, social worker and eventually a male post-natal nurse discover the extent of Precious’ problems and help her take the drastic actions needed to save her life.

This may all sound like a vision from hell, but people like Precious exist all around us in modern society, where the welfare state and ingrained, multi-generational poverty and an often-negligent school system perpetuate rather than solve their problems. But in the new movie “Precious,” this starkly realistic portrayal of one fictional life points audiences in the direction of true hope by showing that it only takes a few concerned people to save a life and turn it around towards productivity and pride.

“Precious” has been a sensation since its January debut at the Sundance Film Festival under its original title of “Push,” which in turn was based on a cult-hit novel by Sapphire that’s been a sensation since its 1996 debut. The two books and their attendant films are drawing extensive comparisons to the classic novel and movie, “The Color Purple,” and not only due to their subject matter of African-American women learning to stand up for their dignity and self-worth – they also both feature what should be career-making performances from heretofore unknown or disregarded actresses.

The film stars the stunning, one-of-a-kind Gabourney Sidibe as Precious and longtime hack comic Mo’Nique as her monstrous mother with a tragic past of her own, in what are likely the odds-on favorite performances for next year’s Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Oscars. Yet the film also features a wonderful performance by Paula Patton as the teacher who breaks down Precious’ walls by forcing her to learn how to compose her thoughts in a notebook, and surprisingly strong yet small turns by a de-glammed Mariah Carey as Precious’ social worker and rocker Lenny Kravitz as the male nurse who is the first man ever to treat Precious with respect and friendship.

Director Lee Daniels is only making his second film here, following the barely-released and critically derided “Shadowboxer.” But his command of incredibly difficult and dark subject matter is masterful. Following the lead of classic filmmakers who understood it was more effective to leave viewers filling in their own vision of horrific details rather than hammering them with graphic imagery, he shows the bare minimum footage necessary to get the idea of Precious’ abuse across while emphasizing that hope, self-reliance and positive values are essential to overcoming any difficult life situation. And it’s those positive vibes that drew Oprah Winfrey and black filmmaking powerhouse Tyler Perry to attach their names to the film as “presenters,” in the hopes of drawing attention to this valuable enterprise.

If you can handle the depictions of abuse and frequent profanity (which declines as Precious learns to become more eloquent), “Precious” is an unforgettable experience that’s not easily shaken.

Beyonce, Gaddafi, Obama & the Love of Luxury

beonycer
ST. BARTS & KAILUA: What’s up with Hollywood that it has such a fascination for dictators? Bill Maher articulated it often when he has shown his impatience with the US political process. He seems to be enamored with the efficiency of a despot’s rule.

Apparently we can add Microsoft founder Paul Allen to the list of starry-eyed admirers as he was seen partying last week with Beyonce and Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi’s son Hannibal:

Popstar Beyonce Knowles reportedly performed at a party thrown by Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi’s son Hannibal, notorious for violence against women, for almost an hour on New Year’s Eve, New York Post reported.

The 28-year-old singer performed five songs in a sexy black leotard at the Nikki Beach club on St. Barts in front of a crowd that included her husband Jay-Z, Usher, Microsoft founder Paul Allen and Lindsay Lohan…

Just a week earlier, on Christmas Day, Hannibal, 33 — also known as Moutassim — allegedly attacked his wife, Aline Skaf, in his suite at Claridge’s in London. Three of his security staff were arrested for obstructing police. Skaf was reportedly hospitalized with a broken nose while Hannibal was whisked away in a diplomatic car. New York Post

Hannibal (well-named) gets whisked away with diplomatic immunity while his wife is hospitalized. Then a few days later he jets to St. Barts and parties with Paul Allen, Beyonce, and other celebrities. Despotic rulers love their glamour and their luxury and celebrities love to party with them.

Home of George W. BushWhile we’re at it why not compare George W. Bush’s Christmas holidays at his own home with Obama’s Christmas holidays? For the last two Christmases Obama has vacationed at a $4,000 a night villa in Hawaii while he also rents two adjacent villas for his family and friends. Let’s not forget the transportation costs to and from Hawaii for his entourage, and housing for his security staff. Kailua is known as the most beautiful beach in Hawaii and a traditional vacationing spot for royalty.

What a better spot for our own royalty to soak away their stress while we are being subjected to attempted suicide bombers? Surely none of his loyal subjects complained when he didn’t even bother to make a statement about the bombing for three days.

The left’s appetite for luxury is never satiated, along with their demand that the rest of us fund them in their extravagance.

Teddy Pendergrass

Teddy Pendergrass, the seductive R&B singer who continued his recording career after he was paralyzed in a 1982 car accident, has died at the age of 59.

According to abcnews.com, Pendergrass’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, told the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper that his father died on Wednesday at a Philadelphia-area hospital. He had undergone colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had a difficult recovery.

Pendergrass began his career as a drummer but first rose to fame in the 1970s when he became lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, which had hits such as “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “I Miss You.”

He was an international superstar and sex symbol. His career was at its apex — and still climbing when Pendergrass crashed his Rolls-Royce in Philadelphia in 1982 and was left paralyzed from the waist down. He resumed his recording career the next year with the album “Love Language” and returned to the stage by performing from his wheelchair at the Live Aid concert in 1985.

Keyshia Cole On Why She Parted Ways With Family

Keyshia Cole

Keyshia Cole gives an update on career, baby and relationship with estranged family.

After hearing all the rumors that are making the rounds on the internet, Keyshia Cole released the following statement:

To all my friends and fans – It’s time that I clear the air. It’s not a secret that I haven’t been in contact with my mother Frankie, and my sisters Neffe and Elite and I never wanted to air out our differences to the public. While I won’t go into detail here I find it necessary to let you guys know I decided to stop communication with them because I was at a point in my life where I needed serenity and peace to move forward. Please know I love my family very much but it was time to let it go. You guys are a witness to a lot of what was happening from watching on air and online. Now that I am becoming a mom my passion for having a loving and peaceful home for my child is my #1 priority. It’s very important to both Daniel and I. My plate is very full; I have a new baby coming, we are planning our wedding and I am working in the studio on a new album that I am close to completing. The stress that my family is giving me with their constant false reports is not healthy and it’s not what I need at this time in my life. Please understand that there are only a few people that can officially confirm or deny anything that’s happening in my life and that’s me, Daniel, and my publicist, Tresa Sanders. And my girl Monica never lies.

Love Your Girl,

Top 10 Highest Paid Models Revealed, None Black

Top 10 Highest Paid Models Revealed, None Black
By Jeanene James January 8, 2010 5:30 pm

black models,power,money

AOL just released the earnings of the ten highest paid models in the industry, and it comes as quite a surprise that not a single one of them is black.

The list reveals that the models make between 35 and 3.5 million dollars per year. While those numbers are shocking in and of them selves, the fact that none of the premiere black models have cracked the top ten is even more of a surprise. It is widely known that black models are disproportionately represented in the fashion industry. Still, there are some well known African-American supermodels that seem to be worthy of the top echelons of the industry’s cash cows. Naomi Campbell is still heavily immersed in the fashion machine and has seniority over all of the models named in AOL’s list, though her earnings obviously aren’t in agreement. In addition, several young black supermodels like Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez and Jourdan Dunn, have experience (ie. Victoria Secret contracts) that is similar if not equal to that of the lucky few who made the list. Unfortunately, however, there is a disparity between what black and white models in the fashion industry earn; AOL’s list has made that all too clear.

To check out the lucky ladies who made the big bucks this past year, go here.

The latest task in the house was it’s first ever ‘Hunk Off’ where it was explained to the males of the house that they would go head-to-head in three rounds, the first being swimwear, to win the title of ‘Hunkiest Housemate.’

Sisqo was worried about wearing the bathing suit, a brightly colored genital pouch, saying “I gotta shave.”

However, the women of the house served as judges and, in the end, Sisqo received the winner’s crown and sash.

What the hell happened to the Sisqo we once knew? Is he that desperate to get his career back on track?"
